Beautiful, bright and mild. Arose 7:30 A.M. Breakfast and devotions. Studied. Dinner. Worked 12 M-2 P.M. Haircut. Shower. H.H. left on 4:42 train. Took nap. Down to supper. Studied, read and talked. To bed 10:30 P.M. Thankful for all blessings.

Candlemas Day ~ Sun shining brightly at noon ~ due for 6 weeks more winter.

So, it's Groundhog Day for us these days, but Stanford knew it primarily as Candlemas Day, a Christian holiday. Below is some interesting information about Candlemas Day, taken from the website, Project Britain Folklore Calendar, that reveals how the two holidays interact.

I've created this blog to make a record of the hand-written journals of Stanford Stillman Closson (1900-1982), who was in his life a Methodist Minister, grandfather, father, brother, husband, son and friend. This is the sixth installment of Date Book, covering 1924 (the first five cover 1919-1923). For as long as seems practical, I will record subsequent years (they continue into the 1970s). I'm matching the days--January 1, 1924 to January 1, 2018, for instance--with one entry per day.

The daily entries are pretty short, though, so in addition to recording the diaries, I'm also annotating them, giving additional information about the people, places and events mentioned by Stanford, including pictures and other information gleaned from the internet.

And this year, as Stanford continues his studies at Boston University, he becomes engaged to Mary Leah and has his first preaching assignment. I will, therefore, be including some of his and Mary Leah's letters as a way of fleshing out the rather brief entries he includes in his diary.

Through the diaries, the letters and other annotations, I hope to convey a sense of Stanford's life and times. And of course, I'm also hoping to give his descendants a fuller picture of who he was as a young man.
