Datebook 1924: Letters - January 1, 1924

Stanford and Mary Leah, his future wife, wrote many letters back and forth over the years they were together. Below are the letters each wrote the other on January 1, 1924.

Note: In the below letters, with the horizontal view, the pages move from right to left (page 1 on the right, page 2 on the left, etc.) Also note: Mary Leah's letter was apparently written in red pencil but was gone over by someone who wished to make it more legible.

I've created this blog to make a record of the hand-written journals of Stanford Stillman Closson (1900-1982), who was in his life a Methodist Minister, grandfather, father, brother, husband, son and friend. This is the sixth installment of Date Book, covering 1924 (the first five cover 1919-1923). For as long as seems practical, I will record subsequent years (they continue into the 1970s). I'm matching the days--January 1, 1924 to January 1, 2018, for instance--with one entry per day.

The daily entries are pretty short, though, so in addition to recording the diaries, I'm also annotating them, giving additional information about the people, places and events mentioned by Stanford, including pictures and other information gleaned from the internet.

And this year, as Stanford continues his studies at Boston University, he becomes engaged to Mary Leah and has his first preaching assignment. I will, therefore, be including some of his and Mary Leah's letters as a way of fleshing out the rather brief entries he includes in his diary.

Through the diaries, the letters and other annotations, I hope to convey a sense of Stanford's life and times. And of course, I'm also hoping to give his descendants a fuller picture of who he was as a young man.
